Turtle Watching
A moment worth slowing down for
Watching a turtle in its natural habitat is an extraordinary experience. If you’re fortunate enough to encounter one during your stay, a little space and stillness go a long way.
We invite guests to:
- Enjoy turtles from a respectful distance of at least 10 metres.
- Keep movement and conversation quiet and gentle.
- Observe from behind, leaving the path ahead clear.
- Allow the beach to remain naturally dark after sunset by avoiding torches, phone lights and flash photography.
- Follow the guidance of our island team during an encounter.
Hatchling Season
Their first journey
From December to May, tiny hatchlings may emerge from beneath the sand and make their instinctive journey towards the ocean — an unforgettable sight for those lucky enough to witness it.
Natural darkness helps guide hatchlings towards the water. Keeping lights away from the shoreline, closing tent flaps when interior lights are on and simply giving them space allows this remarkable journey to unfold as nature intended.
Sharing the Island
A home for more than turtles
Wilson Island is alive with wildlife. Alongside nesting turtles, the island provides important habitat for seabirds, including the threatened Roseate Tern.
As you explore, following the island’s designated pathways and the high tide line helps protect nests that can be beautifully camouflaged among the sand and coral.
It’s a simple way to care for the extraordinary surroundings that make a stay on Wilson Island so special.
